After reading the previous post abot Google and its effects on ranking, lots of good information was brought up. Was hoping some experienced SEO people might like to delve into specifics about some of the things brought up.
Particularly, what is deemed "quality content", what is "good internal linking" and what is "on-topic reciprocal linking." I've heard all these terms before (such as in the previous topic), but really don't know all the details.
I also know nothing about Google penalties, so if anyone knows some of the technical do's and dont's to avoid common and accidental penalties, that would be great informtion.
Thanks.
Jim
This looks vaguely familiar, hmmm...
quality content - mostly about text and copywriting, and usually a trade-off between readability and keyphrase targeting.
Good copywriting targets the visitor in your site, keyphrase targeting -- targets a potential visitor from a search engine query.
Copywriting: Your online resource for widgets. vs
Keyphrase Targeting: Find Widgets here! Widgets.com is a site for widgets, how to use widgets and the history of Widgets,
or attempting to target >>widget<< and >>widgets<< on the same page.
The first is preferred, using the "text" of your web page specifically for a current visitor.
There are many other ways of creating keyphrase targeting.
good internal linking - developing a link hierarchy and almost always having a link back to your main page.
If a visitor needs to click a back button the site needs "link work".
We tend to look at a site from the top down, but a visitor comes in from a search engine normally on the page that best matches their query. Can they easily navigate from this page to other pages with similiar topics.
Use of link attributes in a link element or anchor text: title="" (also known as tool tip) and alt="" (normally for image/graphical links) can assist visitor navigation as well as assist your "Keyphrase Targeting" efforts without compromising your text copy. If using a text link (anchor text) the text should reflect (short is better) the theme of the page the visitor is going to (tool tip and/or alt can expand on this but should generally be to same.
on-topic reciprocal linking - linking to other sites that share a common topic to the page the visitor is on. These tend to be non commercial sites, sites that complement your information and if possible sites -- known for their integrity or an authority site within your specific industry and/or market (e.g. industry associations, local government sites, commercial industry specific portals).
Some of my basic considerations anyway.
