Can google crawl for the next update before they do the update?

Do they always crawl after the update?

It usually starts at about the same time as the update (at least for high ranking sites - the lower your PR the later your start-time, usually). Sometimes it seems to start right before the update, but most of the time, the reports of "UPDATE!" and "Google's Crawling my Site!" happen almost simultaneously.

Yeah I have known the main monthly crawl to start about a day ahead of the update, but usually it seems to be during the few days after we spot an update starting.

The issue has become a little clouded for some of us with pages that get updated daily, but I'd have said judging by my logs that the main monthly crawl began a couple of hours ago for at least one of my sites.
