There have been various discussions about the issues of checking Google rankings with automated rank checking software such as WPG.

I've just found via a link off Oilman's excellent SEO411 tools site an automated Google ranking tool that "appears" to be OK. Reason being it requires users to have a Google API key. Gave it a test run and it's very fast.

The product is Website Position Report 1.1 from Pwqsoft

Can anyone confirm it's OK to use this without incuring Google's wrath. I know they say API keys aren't for commercial use. The software is freeware, so maybe that get's around it?

Here is how Pwqsoft pitch the software...

Advanced Website Position Reporter (AWPR) is real safe Google search engine ranking report software. Unlike other software send automated queries to Google using Search Service. AWPR send automated queries using Google API Service. User can send 1,000 automated queries per day with your license key . so your IP can not be blocked by Google for website position report.

I would like to ask GG the same question. :) But wait, if I do rank checking for our site it will take tons of time (and *way* more then 1000 queries), so I guess, it won't help me :(

You need more than 1000? How about 20,000? You should have at least 20 days between the end of one dance and the start of the next.

PageRank for the page offering this tool is ZERO, so I guess not! (the rest of the site has PR4).

I checked into that software and checked Google's terms of use for thier API:

No Automated Querying
You may not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system without express permission in advance from Google. Note that "sending automated queries" includes, among other things:

using any software which sends queries to Google to determine how a website or webpage "ranks" on Google for various queries;
