We have a directory... good original content, 15 sites descriptions and urls per page.
However, we would like to slip into our pages 3 or 4 ppc affiliate links. The urls will look like:
[affiliates.nameofaffilliatecompany.com...] etc
Will google condem us as being an 'affilliate' leech and lower our rankings?!
Check the domain out in AllTheWeb.com to see if any other links are present.
If links here (ATW) click through on a few noting toolbar again.
If should green the orginal domain has more likely than not been penalized (whether something their doing or linking to someone else doing something wrong).
You can also look at the code as well.
MHes, if you've got a Mac and no toolbar, so that you can't check the Page Rank yourself, have someone with a PC check it for you.
Check the directory category at Google, you can see the Page Rank there if the site's gotten in. A lot of affiliate sites can't get in to ODP because of not having enough unique content, which might not be the case with this site.
You can read through previous posts in the Directories [webmasterworld.com] forum to see what the climate is for affiliate sites. Just a couple of links shouldn't tip it too much if there's good content that's considered enough to add value to ODP. And if the site's good a few links scattered in shouldn't deter other links, either.
I just looked at a page with some affiliiate links on it that's PR6 - so it's no problem with that site, obviously. Is there anything indicating the possibility of a current penalty?

(I use a mac....no tool bar)
That part went right by me... didn't even comprehend.
In addition, to Marcia's comments search domain in DMOZ, if there note category and go to Google directory same category, the PR value will be displayed as on the web page.
Although most affiliates can't get listed if they are there and with green PR -- it's a good bet to link.
