As of now, all external links are going to the home page. I've noticed that the PR of the home page currently is currently shared equally between the home page and all of the pages that are included in the global navigation links that appear on every page of the site. If this new PR8 link goes to the specific product page, which has several links back to the home page and a set of global navigation links to the other important pages of the site, will the effect be the same, as far as boosting the PR of the home page and all of the pages included in the navigation links?
The PR will pass from that page to the others in your link structure anyway.
If you have it go to the index page, then much of the benefit will be shared with all the other internal pages - including the less important ones.
You want the links to go to the pages that you want to feature.
Using your link structure to 'target' the PR on the important pages is a useful tactic
