For my buzz i await a nice boost - i now have some fine, new arguments for new users to better search with me than with a big player! If the "average searcher" now has to search too specific to find something useful, i'd argue they should better come to my place where they still can search for general (allthough niche) words and get the best ('cause specialized) results! This wasn't so in the past ... at least with google.
There are many examples where a search on a general word returns very low relevant results with a general se but returns very relevant results with a specialized se ...
A very good example, allthough it's not my area [mods, pleeeease don't delete it]:
Say you run a specialized directory related to puters. Say, you have a category "RAM" with links about RAM, RAM manufacturers, RAM shops, RAM prices, valuable content about RAM, etc. Now go to google and search for "RAM" ... look at the results ... can you imagine the difference? Think, there's a difference between 5 or 10 related adword links at google and tons of links and infos at a specialized se! This is ONE example - quickly found! And believe me, people are lazy, they LIKE to search general even with a specialized se.
Hey, i feel that vortal's and specialized directories could come back!
What do you think?
[edit]Don't know who changed the topic of this thread, but thanks, you're my hero! ;)[/edit]
you could be suprised how many people actually do use more specific search queries on a "specialised" search engine.
[webmasterworld.com...]
For Google France, 51% use three word plus search queries (this is 37% for other search engines).
I would say ideally Google would like to show some theme hubs (directories) on the first results page for a general non-specific search query, and rightly so.
