Was I asleep when "Google indicated to world+dog that it was aware of the problem with its new index, last week"?

I am somewhat relieved (I think) to have read the article this morning only because I have felt Google has been brushing off all the complaints. With all the hoopla of the last update, I would like to know...Does Google really acknowledge any problem at all with the last update? I'm not talking about the "it can never be perfect" problems. I'm talking about many irrelevant results stemming from whatever they did for the last update. Or are they just placating everyone making noise, and brushing off the noisemakers because they are frustrated SEOs. Did I interpret an admission of a major problem in the referenced article? Or am I imagining things?
