What's up with newwindow=1 in Google's URL?

Anyone noticed "newwindow=1" in a Google search URL, e.g., [google.com...]

This will add a "target=nw" to each search result, e.g.,

 <a href=http://www.domain.com/ target=nw>Coolest <b>widgets</b> in town</a>

This won't open a new window in Opera (target="_blank" would) but would be useful for Netscape's sidebar, Opera's hotlist panels or MSIE's whatever.

Anyone knows of a page/panel/application that uses this?

You can choose to open links in a new page in the Google Preferences [google.com]. This setting will be stored in a cookie on you computer.
