Got the grey bar but I rank number 1

What does the grey bar mean?

I noticed since the last update that a factual site we run has the grey pagerank bar. However, on certain keywords we still rank top, above sites with pagerank and with the same keywords in the title/text etc.

I thought the grey bar meant that google came to your site during a period when your server was down and hence that is why your site "is not ranked by google".

But some people here talk of the grey bar as a penalty. Anyone here have time to elaborate?

Grey bar just means that Google hasn't could assing a PR for that page. I.E. if you have added some new pages to your site you can get a "guessed" PR from the toolbar or just the grey bar. Sometimes I have got a grey bar for my homepage (mostly during the dance) and keeped the old PR for the deep pages. It's just a temporal thing and NEVER a penalty.

Thanks guys. Riddle solved. John316 was spot on. Without www it's a pagerank 5.
