I think about starting a free banner and/or linkexchange for good quality sites that are listed within my specialized directory. A link with a text like "free xchange by mydomain.com" would be required under each exchanged banner.

Would you call this a "honest" way to get incoming links or would you call it "brute force" and spammy for g?

Hi there.
I can't realy comment on weather google would like you for it or not ( I would rather leave that part to someone who knew for sure)

One thing to look out for (learned this from experience, the hard way) I ran a similar idea on one of my sites a while back and at first it was a long wait before people started joining. Then all seamed will until I had a wake up call. Two of the sites that signed up had awsome traffic, and as a result I was struggling to keep up with them in terms of impressions. So just make sure you can keep up with the sites you partner with :)
