Is there any way to deterime what position your site is in within a given search result?

Here is what I do (or the paranoid way) ;). I create a local HTML file sitting on my HD. It is a list of the keystrings that are my objectives. I link the given keywords to a generic query.

www.google.com/search?q=gizmo

Instead of the

www.google.com/search?q=gizmo&sourceid=opera&num=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

that I I get using my browser.

Then I click on the keyword to lauch the query in a _blank page. If the site is not whithin the first 30 results, I type "O" in my database, otherwise the position. Then go the next query, usually the same search string on another search service such as MSN or AllTheWeb.

I switch dialup account for each ten search stings.

Some people use online or else automated tools. They are prohibited by Google, and some site got banned for it's usage.

Wouldn't it be easier if you check the se referers in your log files. A referer contains the keyword(s) and the number of the first listed site on the result page (e.g. 40 means your page is on position 40 or below).

[google.com...]

In the example above it is the keyword 'google' and a position below/after '40'.

Now all we need is a logfile parser...

Than, just open the referer in your browser. ;)

Btw, the Google API makes it legal.

You only have a limit of 1000 queries with 10 results per day, though.

/add

I mean you can automate it with, i.e. check for the same query every day for example (or more than one day if you need more than 1000 queries).

>Google's API makes it legal though.

But what about that little "for non-commercial use only " thingy at the bottom of the page.

Well you tell your customers how to do it on themselves. Then they don't make profit from it, right :-)

NN,

Referrer dont bring you to a generic search. doing a generic search let you compare apples with apples, each months.

Plus, what is the difference in efforts of clicking on a referral or a premade grid? : Same thing...

Plus again, my grid (wich are the objectives) is sorted the same way my data base is. Much simpler than hunting for it in a report.

Of course working on referals is another crucial step.

"I type "O" in my database"

- not exactly what you mean by this; can you elaborate?

Zero meaning that if you're not on the first 3 pages of standard results, you're probably not going to be found by anyone who's looking.

Also, as macguru states, he appears to have an additional bonus structure set up where he gets paid some/some more for higher listings.

You can use the software pagerank or you could search on Google for countless hours.

here is how i do it:

1) i have a spreadsheet with search strings in rows and months (or google updates) in columns
2) i split my screen vertically to see the spreadsheet and google at the same time
3) i configure google to show 100 results per page
4) i jump to the site i want to know the position of using "ctrl-f" (search on page)
5) i have a little freeware screen ruler tool to show me the pixel-position of the bowser window scroll bar. a pixel list gives me the google page number (for nomal google settings, 10 results per page) that corresponds the scroll bar position. this is not 100% correct but mostly, enough for my needs.
6) i write down the page number for each string and the position number for those within the first 10 results

this way the monthly work is done within minutes, even for a large list of search strings.
