The screen shot from the google blog is nice, but what I'm seeing on my screen right now isn't. The new version shows much more information in a smaller space, thus making it easier to find things, and is much easier on the eye colour-wise. I like the "and x related" part too. So I'm hoping they go with the change.

sorry shelleycat, I have to disagree with you. I think it looks as cluttered as all other news sites now. I like the idea of easily being able to spot a headline and then reading more if you wish, in true Google style, simple and easy on the eye.

As for the vibrant colour scheme - ouch!

A Google spokesperson confirmed with me the testing of the new news site. As expected, he didn't have a timeline as to when it's going to be available to all.

Btw, I don't see the changes using Mozilla 1.1.

It might be browser specific, but using the same browser (IE on mac OSX) I saw the new stuff yesterday and don't today. I like the old stuff better.

Well must be time for me to go home. After looking at that news site by eyes really strained, but i suppose 15 hours in office in front of computer all day will do that and the GOOGLE RED just adds to it :(

I just have to say: The Google News Site is quite impressive, however it looks. It works very well and I don't think this kind of application is the easiest. I wonder how long and what a team it took to devlope this thing. I wonder how long it takes till I find an employer who does great things like this (no, that's no application :-). Sorry, but I really had to say this.

A more appropriate note: Yes, the red is a little aggressive, but is it really that bad? I think it's ok in the background just the text in red at the top is a little annoying.

Im a bit disappointed if the screenshot is any guide. Like a previous poster it seems to be similar to other news pages in the genre, and would have expected Google to come up with something innovative. However, maybe that is unfair until i actually try it out.. But if "looks" are any guide, I preferred the good old fast loading previous news.google with no fuss, and no piccies. The new site just doesnt LOOK like a google site. - more like CNN/CNBC/AV etc... Guess its back to FAST news again, which still retain i think, news items delivered like search engine reults, which Google news was like.

Hi matthius.. Im basing it on the screenshot from the google blog site. In bangkok on IE6 im still getting the same news.google ive got for months.

"Like CNN" may be a bit unfair! Its certainly smaller footprint and less complex in navugations etc, but the design of having a couple of items with a piccie and longer abstract, then lists of others, and then "categories" are similar.

All these wonderful new features on Google, but we still can't have the simple things like numbered SERPS .....

Is this the first time they put a beta version on a tab on the Google homepage?
I like the grouping of subjects in that you can choose which newspaper you want to read - per news topic.

We non English natives still feel discriminated :)

Alltheweb has other languages and local newspapers in non-english...not often that you see Google lagging behind so strongly ;)

Love it - much better than the screenshot preview. But - Can you replace the US news link to UK news for (guess) UK users? That would be fantastic. The UK has lots of great news organisations.

Seeing how Cnet is now in the running for the title of the nets largest affiliate farm, it just makes me wonder. Does Google get paid by Cnet? Or is Google taking money for placement of the news stories?

Google loves links right? Whens the last time you read a few Cnet articles that had "honest" links in them? God himself could put up a website, Cnet could do a story on it and they wouldn't link to it.

You can have more variety and depth in a 1 minute pull from any of the RSS grabbers than you'd do all day with Google.

I do see (some) The Register stories on there - but it would be good to see The Inquirer featured too. Or Google could always just post a huge link to Fark as they always have lots of news story links daily ;)

Brett, try going to Wired or the Register, pick a headline, and search for it:

A search for online gaming illegal on news.google.com gives me

Likewise, a search for lindows iffy personality gives me

Rocketinfo found the Register article, but doesn't have the Wired article (yet?). The news search is still in beta, but it looks pretty deep and fresh to me so far. :) For example, a search for "inktomi" on other engines with news search, rocketinfo, moreover, etc. seems to return between 1 and 13 results on average. I'm seeing about 43 results on news.google.com. Bear in mind that news is still in beta, but you can expect that we'll search news with the same quality that we search the web. :)
