If a site was banned would googlebot completely skip it or would it hit once than leave?

My log file shows googlebot hit one page then said goodbye.

We were dropped I guess because of some server problems. I have been watching, but only one hit.

The worst part about a Google penalty is the fact that they will continue to show up on a regular basis to request the robots.txt and the home page, and then leave. In fact, that behavior during a normal crawl cycle is pretty much a confirmation that you do have a penalty.

Presumably they do this to see if the domain just goes dead for a while. If Google never showed up again, if a domain name lapsed, and someone bought it a year later, it would still be banned. This prevents domains from being banned until eternity.

so do you think a possible method of removing a ban is to remove everything from the server for a few months and then try again... or would that be to easy?
