How will Google remember?

I was just wondering how Google is going to commemorate this sad anniversary tomorrow.

After all, Google played a key role in helping people from around the world stay informed while major news sites were jammed in the hours immediately following the attacks (check out The Effects of September 11 on the Leading Search Engine [firstmonday.dk]).

It will be interesting to see whether they take a "US-centric" or more global perspective in how they spin it ...I'd go for the subdued, global appeal.

But I think 9/11 was felt Globally through the context of the US. I believe people from Ghana to Brazil have identified and will continue to identify with 9/11 through the symbolism of the US. In other words, I would not be suprised to see red, white, and blue all over Google.

Given that Google has always been very discreet and, well, "politically correct" during holidays, anniversaries and recurrencies (e.g., no Christian symbols whatsoever on Google's Christmas doodles, and so on), I don't think we'll see stars and stripes splattered "all over" Google, but I do agree they might use the red, white and blue ribbon (and, let me make this clear, I wouldn't see anything wrong with that, since Google is a US company <added:>and google.com its US home page</added>: I'm much more surprised when I see American flags flying on European sites home pages).

<added:>Please let's try to keep this thread Google-specific: this isn't the right forum for discussing political ideas. Thank you.</added>

There's a red, white and blue ribbon on Google's home page now. Nice touch.

Not from Australia. Perhaps it is country specific.

Nothing from Italy either. I can only see the ribbon through a US proxy.

[added: Wow. I just noticed Yahoo!'s greyscaled home page today. Stunning, even if somewhat distracting for the user experience.]

You see it if you use the toolbar and press "Page Info" and then Translate to English.

You'll also see it if you use International Google [google.com]. It's a small red and blue ribbon [google.com] with 9.11.2001 written below it.

yes, do not see it from India too but when do it as lazerzubb says by translating, it shows.
So Google has kept it restricted to US, it seems

Well, even for 9/11 Google has remained true to themselves. Keep it simple. Nice job Google.

Didn't come up in the International version for me either. But lazerzubb's suggestion [translate.google.com] worked.

I liked Yahoo's page too. I know that there's no way to go back. I just wish we could. I wish that today could be just like any other day.

I have a sneaking suspicion you aren't the only one.

Alltheweb also had a warm message on their page, and as I believe that they are representing mainly the European community, the impact that this day has is surely felt worldwide.
