I have spent a while making sure the HTML on my new site re-design validates before I properly launch it and I am just wondering if this would help my pr at all or would google just not differentiate between valid and not valid pages?

Also, I would love to get to the seemingly elusive pr6 (myself and my competition are all on pr5). I will have valid code and a decent number of pages (approaching 500) so is the only thing stopping me from getting an improved pr the number of backward links? If so, approx how many do I need to get? Thousands?

Your thoughts appreciated

Valid HTML is a good thing in itself, but improved PR is not one of its benefits. Google may be unable to parse a grossly invalid page (unclosed tag with nothing near by to close it), but apart from that does not care about HTML quality.

I have just reached a PR of 6 with, according to Google, 210 back links (of which it only shows 105, I very much doubt that the others are real).

Just a reminder, the toolbar truncates (or rounds??) the log of the "real PR" to an integer, there is a big difference in real PR between a high 5 and a low 5, though they are indistinguishable to us. Ciml recently hinted that he is able to get a better estimate of real PR, I hope that he will soon elaborate on that in due time.
