Does google follow image map links?

If so, does it count like a regular graphical link? Is the ALT TAG worth anything? Any thoughts on how to get better value out of the links? Should I duplicate the links in text in the footer? Thanks in advance.

Short discussion on it, but here's the answer about image maps:

Text links are still good to use if there are keywords in the text. I've had Google pick up alt text, but I don't know if it has the same value as body text. You can also use the title= attribute.
