Linking old domain to new domain

Is their any harm or penalties in doing so?

Hi all.. We had a website up sometime ago and recently launched a new website - the old site is really nothing but a one page site at this point that says now see our new website at xyz with a couple of hyperlinks to our new website... I do not think this is any kind of a problem but could this cause us to receive any kind of penalties? After reading about people getting penalties for cross linking from their different sites, I am getting a bit worried. Our new site does not link to our old website, the old website just has various hyperlinks that link to different portions of our new website. I wish to keep the old website up though as it is in Ink, Lycos, etc and I believe and hope that these guys will spider that site and find our new site and get us in some of these search engines.

There's no duplication, no redirection and no heavy cross-linking between multiple domains ,so it's hard to see a problem with the situation as you describe.

I linked an old domain with a new one. I put an auto-redirect script into it. However, when google crawled the page its cache said it was the same data as my new page. Thus my ranking went down.

That's strange Weblamer. Usually when Google merges URLs you get a better ranking (the worse one gets its links added the the better one).
