I have seen top results for .com's .net's .info's and even sites hosted on free servers.
I read a good article about it once, about google getting rid of the need for a "good" domain name, since it makes it so everyone can be found. I can't find the link offhand though.
YES, these foreign extensions work just as well with Google as a .com. These can be an excellent choice if your site happens to have a single keyword that is critical in searches, and it is available in these foreign TLDs. For example, if you run a hobby site for dohickeys, and dohickey.com is taken, yet dohickey.ws is available, DO grab the .ws domain.
However, if you are planning on an e-commerce site, the .com is STRONGLY preferred. However, for personal sites these foreign TLDs can make easier to remember URLs.
