Linking Partner Sites

Hi all,

I have a question about linking between two partner sites.

For example, I came across a site that listed 10 or 15 links to identical theme partner sites. These links appeared in the footer of every page on each site.

Is this an acceptable method of linking? Would Google penalize/ban such activity.

From what I can see, the links are between very similarly themed sites and I would also presume that each site has it's own IP? I wonder if that would play a role (good or bad?) in the Google algo.

I wouldn't consider it spam or illegal myself because it's not like you are linking completely divergent sites in a haphazard way.

What do you guys think?

From what I've read, the consensus seems to be that heavy interlinking between 2 sites is still OK.
Personally, I think they're treading on thin ice.
