Above a PR5...

What does it take?

Hello - I would like anyones input on this topic. Our site has been a PR5 since the toolbar started.. Back then we had a mere 6-7 backwards links.. Over the past few months we have acqired over 160 backwards links - which is more than some of our "competetors" have --- yet they have a PR6. Why are we stuck at a 5?

I have realized that PR is just a number - but to beat a competetor out of their #1 spot we need this PR, as our keyword density, etc. is more optimal.

I might ruffle some feathers here but personally I do not believe that pr is the sole factor when obtaining the number one spot over a competitor.

It might be if your pages are optimised exactly the same way, which is extremely unlikely.

One of our sites, has a page (pr6)which ranks in google at fourth position of 2,400,000 results for a generic search and in first place for its optimised keyword, and it is above many other pages with a better pr.

So I humbly suggest analysing your optimisation.

From what I've read here it seem to be not just the quantity of incoming links but the quality. So for example, a couple of incoming links from good pr8 page which in turn doesn't have many links out will do more for your pr than fifty incoming links from pr4 pages.

I'm sure the more experienced people around will be able to give more detail on how this exactly works?

(eek, typos!)

I was stuck on PR5 for what seamed like ages. It looked as if I was destined to a PR5 period. Then at the last update my site went to six. So I think the best tool in the box is patience. It's not just the total number of links but the quality of the link, the wording of the text that makes up the link and relevance of the page that links to you.these factors all add up. I also agree that PR is not the only concern for ranking well general SEO provailes.

I posted this somewhere else recently because I was quite puzzled about it: I found a site with the gigantic number of four (!) incoming links. One of them came from a PR6 site, and this was enough to lift that site to PR6 as well. So don't count just numbers but check the quality of the incming links.

check the yahoo and dmoz directory listing...this seems to give a big bang for your buck...but can be have quite a range depending on the exact catageory u r in!

The PR of the linking page and how many outbound links there are on it. If the pie is cut into fewer portions, each of the slices is bigger.

Sorry to stick my oar in at this late stage, but..

If I link to yahoo in a regional category the PR of the yahoo page is 1, however in the industry category it is 5. Would it be fair to say that a regional link would do me virtually no good as far as PR goes, and does the same apply to dmoz?

your link will help you in google who values the directory entries..so u might not gain much pr from a low pr page..but you will be sure of being picked up by other search engines and google will continue to think of you as well worth indexing...
