Page rank v. Catagory Rank

PR

After the recent update, my catagory rank moved up. The green bar on the catagory rank increased and looked like it corresponded to a PR of 6. However, the PR remained 5 as displayed on the Google toolbar.

It appears that the rank bar on the catogory rank does not miror the page rank bar.

1. Is this a correct observation?

2. How does the catagory rank correspond with the page rank?

Thanks

Please explain the category rank? I've never seen that one discussed before. On my toolbar there is only one "bar" and that's for PR.

Taxpod...

The category rank that is being refered to is the the graphical representation of pagerank that is made availabe in the Google directory next to the websites.

A catagory button for the page is located on top of the toolbar. This button takes you to the catagory where the page is indexed and pages in the index are displayed in page rank order.

In addition, the catagory index is often displayed by with the link show as a result of a Google search.

mack, thanks for clearing that up for me. I was familiar with that. Just didn't know that was being referenced.

HackingLawyer, I don't have that on my toolbar. Must be an option I don't have chosen.

But to your initial question, you apparently moved up within a category which could happen even if your PR never changed since toolbar PR is only an approximation (see other threads regarding actual PR). I mean there are a whole range of actual PRs which are all PR6 on the toolbar.

I'm really not sure how you can distinguish between 5s and 6s in the category. My eyes are not that good. My PR seems to be the same on the toolbar as the one used in the categories.

hi,

it seems that the PR displayed on dmoz.org (i.e. the category rank) corresponds totally with the PR shown on the toolbar. just have a look at the pixel-width of the green bar in the category page's source.

as i just said in a different thread: i just checked the dmoz-page my site is on and all PR7 pages have 27, all PR6 have 22, all PR5 have 16, and so on.
