I had to switch ip's on a couple of my sites and i've heard lots of opinions on what this will do on the next update..Will they just disappear from the index for a month or so...or what?

I've had to change the IPs on my sites a number of times (esp unexpectedly when globalcrossing went sour) and it had no effect on any listing anywhere. Even though with globalcrossing my site was down for a whole week. Google and such just didn't seem to care as long as the domain worked.

check at the top left of the WebmasterWorld with site search cause this topic is about Google

.. make 100% sure that we can keep up our old page (current state) for at least a week after server switched.
Make sure you have the site completely uploaded to the new server before you change however.

The transition must be during midnite and weekend as the norm is that usually sites have fewer visitors ; )
JOB IS EASY AND STRAIGHTFORWARD
"DNS info" points to your host's name servers (the most common setup), the name servers will simply change IP along with everything else hosted.
Keep for a week both old and new!!!
Before doing any changes to DNS.

1. Set up the site on the new server
2. Create a blank copy of the database on the new server.
3. Copy the data across to the new server.
4. Test out the new site using a private DNS server.
5. When you are happy that the site is working correctly copy the latest data to the new server and change the DNS entries.
