After the recent rescaling, I seem to have made PR 8... someone please check I'm not dreaming! I don't know that I qualify as a mom and pop site [webmasterworld.com], but I'm not exactly a megacorp either.

Well done! You've found the secret pagerank 8 code (simply put "pathologically eclectic" on your index page!)

;)

Now - try and get a 9!

Way to go, Danny. For the record, I am showing your site as both PR7 and 8, varies with each refresh at the moment, for me.

Added:

Dang, dude, you have 80 (!) links from the Open Directory to your site.

Thanks everyone!

BeachBoy: yes, things are definitely in flux (www is different to www2 and www3 at the moment, and there's been some kind of rescaling), so I suspect it's only temporary. But I know I'm near the cut-off now, anyway...

billy_t9: I have a "best books" page, but my ten book selection would probably be a bit idiosyncratic for most people.

Great simple and elegant design with original high quality content. I'm sure this helped too.The content is so easy to link to, and is non-competitive/threatening to many other sites. If Google's algo is favouring sites like this then it's a Good Google!

From another "Dan" from Downunder, congratulations. A PR 8 is great in anyone's language so well done. You've built a nice resource which obviously many people are linking to. The best link I could find to either of your sites was only a 7 though. This would be the first time I've seen a site with higher PR than the highest inbond link. Has anyone else seen this?

I'm still searching around for that PR 11 link to Google... ;)

Seriously though I've managed to get a PR 6 by linking from a bunch of PR 5's

Nice on Danny!

If you start seeing weird stuff in your logs it may be WMW members trying to acquire some of your tricks to rank so well ;) Once again congrats

Excellent Danny and thanks... this I believe is why a page on one of my sites now has gone up to 6

brotherhoold of LAN: unfortunately the "trick" I think I benefited from most is not repeatable - that is having had substantial content online in 1994. I had already written nearly 200 reviews then (distributed by email and ftp), and that was a sizeable chunk of content in what was a much, much smaller Web than today's.

PR (both meanings) works a bit like compound interest - the more you have (links) the more you get (links). So starting early makes a lot of difference!

I realise that isn't terribly helpful.

> substantial content online in 1994

No matter what we all say, hard work producing quality content over a long time does work. Well done Danny.

Just in case of mis-interpretation, I meant "trick" in a good way :)

wow, since 1994.....8 years of quality work. I am on year 1....its heartwarming to know that quality work with the right intentions pays off regardless of all the spam etc that is online today.

Nice site danny - not your typical mom and pop.

The really interesting thing here, is that I can see some other pr changes too. Was pr recalc'd netwide? If so, I wonder if the next update will be based upon the new figures...

Was pr recalc'd netwide?

Yeah there does appear to have been a global PR update. One of my sites suddenly 6 up from 5. Also how long has DMOZ been a PR 10?

That's just great to see, Danny. Gives the rest of us something to strive for. My main site went from PR6 to PR7. I don't think its universal, since many are still reporting no change. But the rescaling is widespread.

Congratulations Danny.

I was PR6 for a while but dropped to 5 about 4 months ago and stayed there ever since.

7 is my goal.

Way to go Danny! Congrats, You just proved a mom & pop can do it. I too had a small increase, so I am under the impression the formula must have changed netwide. I am not sure what the change was but further investigation is something that would be nice. Perhaps there is a age affect going on. Your site is really old, maybe Google used some sort of dating to figure out that you deserve an extra PR point. My site that got the PR increase as well had the age thing going for it. Maybe Google PR also ranks with a history bonus?

>>Also how long has DMOZ been a PR 10?

Good question. I know they were 9 as of a couple weeks ago. Also Yahoo! is now a 10, whereas used to be 9.

We also had a bump in PR in past week: from 6 to 7. It is currently bouncing back and forth.

My understanding is that DMOZ and Yahoo! are two of the sites that are given an initial PR by the Google algorithm (as well as Google of course). Am I correct in this?
