It takes time to switch from one search provider to another, particularly for an engine of Yahoo's size. I think Google took a few months to take Yahoo's traffic once the announcement was made that Inktomi lost that deal 2 years ago. So just to throw more opinions in the air, I think it means that Google lost the deal.
On the other front, fcompany has a new rumor about Inktomi laying off hundreds.
So is FAST in the lead after all? And just needs some more time to scale to handle Yahoo traffic which we all know is many times the traffic FAST now handles in the US for Lycos.
If I'm wrong it will be bad for Yahoo, Google, and SEO's. People who wish for a Google competitor will regret it when their traffic drops. I just don't see it happening.

I don't think my traffic would drop much, if at all - most of my sites rank well on Google and Fast.
Many of us would welcome Fast as a replacement because it reduces the 'eggs in one basket' problem.
Some of my clients are far too dependant on Google traffic even though they rank well across the board.
Google has been attracting so many search users to its Google site, that Yahoo corporate is now considering quashing Google's progress.
Hoping to win back Yahoo hearts (and dollars) Inktomi CEO Dave Peterschmidt sent a truck with a billboard to drive around Yahoo's parking lot declaring his company's love for Yahoo.

Don't know why but this popped into my mind on reading that;
Gil: No, wait, no. Aw, you can't take my sale. My wife's going to leave me if I don't start bringing in the green. Come on, let me have this one, Stan, I'm begging you. Look at me, I'm begging you, Stan.Stan: Mm-hm. [walks Homer to his office] Let's go write this up, shall we?
Gil: [pulls a rotary-dial cell phone from his jacket, and dials] Honey, you should have seen me with my last customer, I ... no, but I came so close. This guy was as ... Whose voice is that? Is that Fred? ... Aw, you said it was over ... No, don't put him on -- Hello, Fred, h-hi.

I'll bet it was, very appropriately, a garbage truck.
I think that you don't have Inktomi in your heart...
I understand you; after reading this thread:

Do you think that it was your 'cloaked' garbage ?
The fact of the matter is: P*RN = $$$$$
That's why S*X is the #1 search request, all the time!
Now some FACTS -
* FAST is totally censored and the results SUCK!
* Inktomi is ridiculously full of SPAM, and the results suck worse!
* Google is the best there is, and they have been working on yahoo's directory search (I call Yahoogle) that's making it more like google every day. Then there is the issue of googlebot crawling yahoo, and giving better link popularity to sites in yahoo..
So all indications tell me that you've got to be smoking crack to think yahoo will drop Google, for something as pathetic as FAST or Inktomi.. ;)
Not that I'm prone to looking at p*rn, of course.... ;)
Added:
And yes, adult phrases are censored at a lot of places. Type in "s*x" at Yahoo and you get the same thing. All the G and R-rated sites come before the hardcore ones. If you don't want to sort through tens of thousands of sites, then you need to enter a more specific p*rn search phrase, which is exactly what people at Yahoo and FAST/atw do.
Which is why nobody in his right mind will expect Yahoo (and many other places) to deliver p0rn-related traffic on that single three-letter keyword. Such site operators have to optimize for a more appropriate term or phrase.
Bummer. I rank pretty well in Google for my major keywords, and even better in Fast. I stink in Inktomi and I think their results are extremely sub-par.
My sources are pretty reliable, but you can believe what you want. I don't know when it will be announced.
I hope it's not true...

Could the fact that you 'stink' in Inktomi and you 'think' that their results are 'sub-par' be in any way related?
I frankly don't give a nuts which SE provides back-up results to Yahoo really - though the more I can 'cross their palms with silver' the better I like it :)
I also don't think the average Yahoo user cares that much either. They go to Yahoo for their directory - not back-up SE results. Note: this is my personal opinion only!
Generally though the results are very bad and they coupled them with lay-offs of almost 1/2 the workforce.
Imho if they don't get the Y! contract they are toast.
They aren't up to the standard of Google or Fast, but Inktomi does have a pretty large database, and I haven't noticed the results being too far off.
It would seem that Inktomi's destiny is one of backfill for other engines. Whether this includes Yahoo is yet to be seen.
On a serious note, what popular search engines still use Inktomi.. and the answer is NONE!! Why? Because they SUCK! Google and Yahoo make up over 65% of we searches, with the next big chunk going to AOL, who's soon to be with google..
MSN's deal with Inktomi is almost up.. and MSN has a 13% market share.. and we all know Microsoft is just as much of a money whore as AOL.. So it's just a matter of time before they start googling... :)
As for FAST.. Lycos.. who uses lycos anyway... and there must be a reason... ;)
Personally I would stop using Yahoo for searches is they dropped Google! Then if Google decided to become web portal too (news, finance, etc.), I would have no reason to use yahoo at all... ;)
In the kind of stuff I search for Ink is okay. They are not great but they are not terrible either. I can't speak for the really hotly contested commercial stuff because that is not what I search for.
I would assume that Ink can change the mix of databases used for each customer.
The bottom line is, when a user tries Google, they forget about Inktomi, AV and the rest.
I've whipped this dead horse a dozen times in this forum, but let's do it one more time just for cheap thrills. It's called taking care of your core business, and Inktomi (and many others)...ain't.
