here is a good question.. I belive that when you use sites like oveture they have no effect on page rank because they dont count as an offical link but i was wondering if it made sense to pay directories that have good page rank like business.com in order to achive higher page rank at google even if i really dont care for business.com but am interested in thier potential page rank boost also altavista.com

has this been talked about?
does google ajust the page rank or do they assume that becase you paied to get into these sites you are any better than sites that are not in those directories.
is it worth it to pay for these inclutions (oh inktomi also) to get higher on google?

comments please

You need to distinguish between static and dynamic links.

When you pay for inclusion in Yahoo or any other directory your site is placed in a category with a static url like [dir.yahoo.com...] which can be crawled by search engines.

When you do a search on Google the result page is give by the search tearms and it only exists because told Google to do that search. This result page is dynamic and based on your unique query, which is why search engines can't find it and there is no reason why they should.

This means that it very well can be worth to pay directories like Yahoo or Business.com for inclusion. However, paid inclusion in Inktomi, AltaVista etc. and paid placement in Overture has no value at all in terms of page rank.

How valuable is a business.com listing in terms of page rank though?

from what I can see you can get one link on a page rank five page with lots of other links and then your own page at about PR4 ? You can get a PR 4 by just adding your site to five or six carefully chosen guest books so I'm not keen to pay $99 for it. Am I wrong in the way I'm looking at the page rank, would one of these links really be worth it?

On the point of dynamically generated sites does a link from a dynamic page which has a virtual page rank recieved from it's parent domain still count or are all links from these sorts of pages worthless?

Torben reminded me of something.

Same problem with dynamic pages in use at LookSmart. It's a directory, we have a number of sites listed there, but no PR value forthcoming from it.

i think business.com and other directories have special weight no matter what the page rank is on thier site. any other important directories out there other than odp and yahoo and looksmart

SouperSoup, this is a good place to look around:

Google Directory Business Directories [directory.google.com] category.

They're listed by industry-related categories, you can see the Page Rank, and aside from that, good ones can send some direct traffic also.
