I'm a new member, and this is my first post. I'm writing because I'm having a horrible time getting ANY search engine or spider or directory to list my new site.
We obtained our domain name end of April, and uploaded pages we had developed on a free site to a paid host, then submitted our new home page to the search engines/ directories, etc first week of May.
Resubmitted to a those saying it would take 2-4 weeks on May 30, and resubmitted to those saying it would take 6 weeks on June 16. Still nothing. Not listed in anywhere-- and come to think of it, I don't believe we've had any spider even come to look at the site.
I've checked all the typical reasons-- bad HTML code (we passed Dr Watson's), bad links, download time (only 30K), spam, etc....
The only thing I've heard is that possibly my host has been banned, or a site hosted by my host that has a similar IP address to mine has been banned.
ANY ideas? I read in one of the posts that the Google Tool Bar may help get a spider to my site-- I've downloaded it-- I'll let you know if I can get a spider!!!
Thank for your help-- really appreciated!
Do a search in Google for your site. When you see the first results page, go up to your browser's address bar and change the www. to www2. and then to www3. and see if you're listed anywhere in there.
We had a client site which sat in www2 for a few weeks and just now was indexed over to the public listings at www. about a week ago. It takes patience.
Also-- one question that's been plaguing me-- can search engines and robots deal with domain names that are hyphenated? Does anyone have a domain name that has been indexed that is hyphenated?
but if the Open Directory doesn't have an editor for the category I've applied to, will it I ever get listed?
yes, it will just take longer. You could consider sending an e-mail to the next editor up from your category.

Yes, just do a search on the major engines using a dash between two or more search terms.
I ran my reporter, and I am finally listed in one of the search engines. I am finally indexed in Alta Vista-- still no luck with the open directory, google, or hotbot, but now I feel I've spoken too soon!
Or did writing in the forum help? I've never had this much traffic to our site! Thanks everyone!
