Is the word "the" is now a joker term for any language to know how big is the index ?

Yes, I thing Google has more than they say they do. They just don't like to brag.

Interesting side note, the #1 result for Macromedia Flash is greyed out on the Page Rank.

Given that a Google competitor (alltheweb.com) is bragging about the size of its index being bigger than Google's, it would be a good idea for Google to keep the public advised. You don't want to let them get away with it.

Allergic,

looks like a FAST teaser in disguise ;)

in this thread: [webmasterworld.com...]

of an earlier Google index, I found: "the = 2.550 mill. "

Could it be real estimation numbers? or rough guestimations? or would it include usenet data? Given the reported number of pages indexed by Google; 2.073 mill. on the bottom of the google.com page..

see also this article [searchenginewatch.com] which is more than half a year old, so the total index should be larger..even though maybe 80% of webpages are english.

I think not the number of indexed sites is the most important thing about a search engine - the quality of the results and the speed is important.
Quality vs quantity.
