Extra Domains Linking to a Site...

Does it help...?

Hi, a client owns a website, hosted on Uk2Net, and as well as the www.myname.co.uk and .com, he also owns a number of other 'connected' domain names. Uk2net will allow forwarding to this site..which is fine, but also the ability to enter keywords, which presumably get added to the page, which, once entered into a SE index would help improve rankings, as they not only act as quality direct links, but also as agteway pages...can i use this to increase rankings in any way...? and if so, how best should i do it...?

Thanks

Harley

This would depend on what type of forwarding is used (HTTP redirection, META refresh, frames, a text link, etc.) and on how the keywords are used in the page (META keywords are generally useless).

More importantly, are there a lot of good links to these other domains? If so, then you should want to collect the PageRank and hand it on to the main site. If not, then they won't do any real good in Google whatever you do with them.

Harley,

If you are talking about UK2's Webdiversion then no it doesn't help at all as the redirect is done via frames.

Yeah...thats what i thought...so the only way to do it would be to have each domain with its own webspace, a bit of blurb and a direct link to the site, rather like a splash page...

pity, if UK2net could work it right...then they could make a killing out of people buying up extra keyword domains just to increase traffic cheaply...

Assuming that the subject here is Google, the extra domains only help if you get extra links from outside your network.

If you could get those links into the main site anyway than I don't see the point.

"...people buying up extra keyword domains just to increase traffic cheaply..."

sure.. and gum up the web even more with domains with no content of themselves.. Hopefully google will catch up with this practice.

no, not at all. from a quality search point of view, the bots should give high rank to any wooden toy site that owns www.woodentoy.com, as the investment required in that at least partially proves the quality of the site. And in fact we know that right now SE's do give higher rank to those sites whose keywords appear in the domain name. why then should the same wooden toy site not be given an even higher rank for key words like 'toys that are wood' is it owns that domain too and points it to its site...surely that would simply prove its worth all the more...? i do agree however there is a huge possibilty for abuse there, but as long as the engines can see the the site these extra domains link to is related to the name of this extra domain, i see nothing but an increase in the quality of searches....

I disagree, Harley. It's quick, easy and cheap to buy up a bunch of domains. Quality content takes a lot of time or a lot of money.

Fortunately, the domain name makes no substantial difference to Google rankings (though a well chosen domain can help with getting good link text from the ODP and other places).
