launched a new site early may, got into dmoz mid may, but was not included in google as of this last dance.

paid the $299 yahoo fee and was listed in yahoo on 5/31. I didn't expect to get into google until at least the next dance.

voila -- I happened to stumble upon myself listed in google today, with a refresh date of 6/2!!

what a nice surprise. and decent placement on some keywords!!!

PR3, but I'm happy for now!

Sooooo.....whats the better link to have? Dmoz or Yahoo?

I've thought Yahoo for a while now even though many say DMOZ.

Congrats :) I believe that everything happens in time. So many of us even myself are impatient to be listed. I am in Yahoo and DMOZ, I get more traffic from DmOZ than Yahoo by far.

<<Sooooo.....whats the better link to have? Dmoz or Yahoo?>>

I find a higher proportion of Dmoz sites have higher PR than Yahoo sites, no doubt having to do with how deeply sites get buried in either directory. From that perspective alone, I would say Dmoz is better.

However for traffic, Yahoo wins. Solution: Be in both, Yahoo for traffic considerations, Dmoz for PR value.

Also, apparently Yahoo directory positioning is now at least in part driven by Google PageRank, which means a Dmoz listing will impact favorably upon PageRank, which will in turn impact on your ranking in Yahoo.

From a Google standpoint I'd say DMOZ because their categories are used in the Google directory.

From a traffic standpoint Yahoo by far.

We probably get 3x the traffic from DMOZ as we do from Yahoo, and Yahoo keeps dropping a tad every month it seems.

coolshop, the same thing happened to me with a new site just now. The refresh date is 6/3 and I paid to get in to Yahoo.

My question is now, is this a well-known trick, -to get listed with one of the mayor directories, to get into Google with the index page between regular updates?

Help (googleguy?),

Ive made it into google too!, once true the dmoz, and since (2/6) on my top keywords, but now i've seem to be banned !?!? from google.

I'me using my index page to describe what we offer in our online store in the english and dutch language (using <h3>), could this be the problem for beeing listed 1st and Banned Later !?

Homer perhaps you should start your own thread and describe exactly why you think you're banned.

One thing to bear in mind for anyone who is "got into google" ;) is that sometimes you phase in and out of the index. If you are there, great!

But sometimes it will seem like you are not. Best to read up on old posts...there has been many about google :)

Many posts about Google? I know it's still early, but this will be my candidate for understatement of the month! :)

I have an old site that i've been updating for new keywords. The phrase "in and out like a fiddlers elbow" comes to mind.
Take brotherhood_of_LAN's advice and Read around and you will see that this is almost a Google rite of passage. At least it seems that way to me.

I'm still in, -but now as #1 instead of #3 the other day. The odd thing is that my main site now has dropped from #1 to #7.

Is this some kind of a smaller update... -or is it just me?

I'me back too (top ranking, thanx to allot of postings found here), with both languages.
I read some other posts in the google-dir, and it seems (Atleast) google does multiple scans on your site, indexing different stuff each time, so perhaps best wait before popping that champagne ! ;)

HoMeR and coolshop,

Do you see any changes in the ranking between the first 5 to 10 results?

- I'm only in with the index page too.

5 - 10 ranking ?, yep, ime there in with some keywords ;)
the whole list changes, there's no logic that positions 5-10 would not change ?

coolshop - I've had something similar with two new sites earlier this year, both jumping in-and-out of the index for the first month (also often just index page listed). Both now have stable listings. Seems that for this first month some new sites that gain a 'fresh' status will be visible for that 'fresh' period (2 days?) and then drop out again. But it all gets sorted out next monthly update.

Hi all,

I finally got into Google early Sat. morning and sure enough I check my google listing (only the index page so far) and I've been dropped. I couldn't believe the spike in traffic in just one day so this is kind of disappointing.

From what you guys have been saying here, that seems a bit common for new sites that have just been listed.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to why this happens?

And, how long does it take (and what can I do) to get Google to list my other content pages?

Thanks!
g.

Further to my posting in msg 25 - it seems that something new has been happening with Google this month. Check out this thread:

Hello,

I also optimized my pages for google in may/june, there after i just left them alone, letting google do its "thing", now (after some 6 weeks) my pages are top-ranking, on my preffered key-words, and sub pages get indexed well too. so i guess patience is also a Key-Word ;)
