Traffic from Google, But No Backlinks?

I am getting hits from Google, but they say I have no links.

I have recieved about a half dozen hits from search queries on Google in the 2 months my site has been up. Extremely targeted searches. But when I "link:http://www.example.com" on Google it comes up with nuthin. Even when I Google the same terms people came to my site with, I can't find my site in the first 10 pages of results.

This plays into the theory that new sites must "pay their dues" in Google. Yahoo has about 107 links to my site indexed. I have about 5 times as many hits from them.

First, why would they do this? For every reason I come up with there are two better ones not to.

Second, and more puzzling, how are people getting to my site through Google if I am not indexed? Am I on a portion but not all of their servers?

Have you tried "site:example.com" instead?

Google's link search doesn't show all the links. Also, it can take a while to be updated while the search results are based on more recent data.
