Retrieving a 301ed domain

Can I repopulate a 301ed domain and avoid it being in the sandbox?

Last september I 301ed our .com domain to a .co.uk version.

Unfortunately, this resulted in the new domain being in the sandbox.

I am thinking about partially reversing the change and putting the some content back on the .com site. Has anybody had any success of rescuing matters in this way? Seems a shame to waste our articles because nobody has seen them in 4 months.
