Permanent redirect hurting?

I started a website with a /catalog ending because this is the default setup. Instead of changing many things, I put a permanent redirect from www.example.com/catalog > www.example.com

Will this hurt anything? Just wondering. Also, should I place my robot.txt in both directories? Will it hurt if I put it in both places?

The robots.txt goes only in the root directory. It's a good idea to validate it and make sure to include the "s" - robots.txt so it gets picked up properly.
