I know for a fact that there are links to my site out there from other people's sites. In fact there is one particular one that is linked to my site and when I do a lookup of its backlinks on google, I see my site listed! Any ideas on what might be causing this? I believe this is the reason why my site is not being indexed well on google.

Google's displayed backlinks are intended to confuse inexperienced webmasters. Ignore them (or lack of them).

Are you serious? Is there another more accurate way of checking backlinks?

Try the link operators at Alltheweb or Yahoo. They may not show all of your links, but will certainly show more than Google is at the moment.

hehe. It was announced last year around May 2004 that Google will henceforth be showing a mix of websites in the backlinks. The idea is that they wanted to show a varied mix of backlinks, not just PR 4 and up.

Google has never shown an accurate accounting of backlinks. Yahoo is a better tool for finding backlinks.
