I'm old enough and ugly enough to understand that the rate at which Googlebot visits a page is determined, at least in part, by the number of good navigable links to a page.

Well, until recently, Googlebot was visiting my home page at 4am, regular as clockwork, every day, and the page would first appear in the SERPS with *that* cache date round about breakfast 28 hours later.

Just recently I've done a lot of work, placed a lot of new pages, all 350 of which, as far as I can see, were indexed within 2.5 weeks.

My question is this... As more pages that were indexed (each containing a link to the homepage), the rate of visiting of Googlebot to the home page hasn't changed - still 4am every morning; however, the time from that visit to appearing in the cache is down from 28 hours to 17 hours.

Is this coincidence or is there a mechanism here I need to understand...

It's a leading question - depending on how the discussion goes, I have another, more complex one to ask <grin>
