I'm doing a site: search and get results 1 - 11 of about 1360. Click "repeat the search with the omitted results included" and get results Results 1 - 5 of about 1.360. Did it several times same result over and over.

What could that mean?

It could mean that Google really has only indexed 800 million URLs, but I doubt it.

They can't tell you about the rest of the pages for national security reasons.

I had a similar situation some time ago. In my case it seems that it was a penalty for a directory, i.e. pages from that directory were removed from the SERPs but were included in the number of result pages.

Did you recover from that doc_z?

No. I tried it (I changed the content of the pages), but without success. However, when I moved the new pages to a new directory, everything was fine.

This happened almost an hour ago.

I had 1200 pages indexed and when i go through the indexed pages it gives me 270 and when click on repeat the search with the omitted results included it gives me 999 or so results. An hour ago suddenly the number of indexed pages jumped to 3200 but the issue is when i try to get the number of indexed pages it shows only 169 and when i click on repeat the search with the omitted results included it shows 580.

Does anybody have an explnation?

A couple of years ago we'd have said this is the Google Dance in progress. Isn't there a similar discrepancy nowadays between data centres with the continuous updates?

I think you're right, it looks like it is a work in progress.

I'm now seeing 1-72 of 72 :)

Not a site I'm affiliated with so I don't know why. Possibly a site remake.
