How are domains w/ multiple extensions handled?

why would a .uk version of page be higher ranked than .com on Google?

I noticed in some of my searches that a UK version of a page was higher ranked than the .com version of it...

ex. site.co.uk/page ranked higher than..
site.com/page

actually, the .com version of the page did not even show up in the results.

Why does this happen? (...the page rank and content of the pages are identical, and i actually found more pages linking to the .com version of the page)
