Do new subdomains avoid the Sandbox.

Looking for alternatives to creating a new site.

The company I work for wishes to roll out a new website that will focus on one of their core services. We all know that this isn't a good time to roll out new websites that will perform well in the SERPS right away. The company currently has a fairly successful, established website. I'm wondering if, instead of doing a new website, perhaps I should push for a subdomain on the old website for the new content. I'm curious if anyone has created subdomains recently with new content that have managed to avoid the Sandbox.

All sorts of things avoid the sandbox - whatever that means.

Modest sites seem less affected by this embargo.
I launched a 7 page site last weekend and it was in the Google Index in 3 days. Sorted.

Instead of using a subdomain, I've also taken a site
www.made-up.com/webmasterworld
and done the opposite - added a folder
www.made-up.com/webmasterworld/added/
and that's been in the index in 3 days too.

I'm of the (totally unsubstantiated) opinion that "sandbox" is not an issue for modest changes.
