It's now being advertized on the main google.ca home page. It's also available in both English and French (fully translated interface), which is very good to see - often the French-language version arrives later than the English-language one.

Banner find! I never go by the home page anymore (thanks to the built in search bar in FF, which is loaded with G and a few other specific engines).

This is very useful. I'm going to pass it along and see if I can get some feedback if it works.

I see it on the home page now for www.google.com

"Looking for a coffee shop near you? Try Google Local."

[local.google.com...]

Hmmm... local.google.ca had the wrong directions and address for a golf course I was looking for, that map and address is not always correct, but the link to their site was right.

I made a separate post on this but seems like it did not make the cut, so maybe here is better.

Anyone know how the "Google Local" functions, i.e. where is it pulling these listings from and how? Spent some time searching on it and boy did I find it confusing?

It is a pretty significant development for anyone driving traffic on a national basis and then turning that into localized referrals.

>>56km NE

That must be one busy plumber. The only guy for a city close to a half million and he has a half hour commute.

It's going to need a lot more, and better quality listings before it can really do the job it was designed for.

A check of a few categories in my local area generated laughable results. Local residents will only need to scan the results once to see that it is of little practical use...yet.

Relevance is pretty crappy. A search for "dating services" got me a chiropractic clinic and Tim Hortons (it is Canadian after all!)

Glad to see it tho - I'm sure G will work the bugs out.

not quite working perfectly yet, still had to use Yellow Pages

Local search somewhat feeds off data from regular web sites, which is pretty cool. Actually , it probably not that hard to do, beacause, once a name has been located, the code probably just looks for address type strings right after the name.

still, hopefully the google bot is going to start understand what sites are all about

Tim Hortons (it is Canadian after all!)

Not anymore it isn't. Timmy's got bought out by Wendy's a few years ago.

And now Target is trying to buy the Bay.

I could comment on this, but the TOS would block my choice of words.

>>Timmy's got bought out by Wendy's

I think it was more of a merger. The owners of Tims now are shareholders in Wendys. I beveive I read recently that the Timmys unit is way more profitable than the Wendys unit.
