Meanwhile, Google and its rivals continue to make waves on other fronts. On Sunday, the New York Post reported that, based on recent hires of high-tech personnel, including certain Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - commentary - research) veterans, it appeared that Google is developing its own Web browser and other software products to challenge the Redmond giant.

What about GOOZILLA? :)

or MOGLE? NETLE? BROOZER?
anybody checked whether the corresponding domains are already taken? After all, if you get it exactly right, you may make a lot of money. Just remember Altavista...

>> the javascript tracking in their pages is insufficiant to get real data (such as how long a user is on a site...did they click through and grow so frustrated with your results that they went to another engine - of did they find the site they wanted and make a purchase) <<

So Google doesn't get to record the date and time, your IP address, the URL of the page you are viewing, and the URL of the referring page then, when you look at a page with adsense content on it?

Of course they do. That must give them a huge daily database of click history, link to link, page to page, site to site.

Also, couldn't they just get that sort of information from the Google toolbar, if that was what they were after? No need to build a whole new browser...

A lot of people don't have the G toolbar installed in IE, and then there are us Firefox users. It looks like G is turning into Big Brother... what is it about N American companies, anyway? They're not happy just getting your business, they have to own you.

Well that is what the nature of all business has become. Information, about what you like, dislike eat dont eat wear dont wear poop dont poop.....

Before they used to fight for a space in your hearts and minds through ads in TV and other media, now they know if they just get some space on your computer they can practically make you go to them (without you even realising)

And as far Longhorn market share is concerned, its not so positive. There was a report that it will really take time as every version of windows has incresed only because of increase in computers. And this increase in desktop computers is supposed to slant down in the coming years. It will have 60% market share by 2008-2009 according to some estimates (boy i really wished i remember the site where i read the report, as gving out figures without covering my ass makes me nervous.) And thats a long time of from now i bet the genies at G can whip up something by then.
Yup the results now are pretty stale but i guess thats why they have got a new stack of bots huh..to freshen up the index. So you know what to wish from Santa this christmas (ofcourse by then i could be too late)

If the url name will be gbrowser.com, than the product name will surely be named gbrowser. I donīt see any reason not to do that, from a branding stand point.

If they put Adsense on side (ok you mentioned that BUT:) for every ad you visit, they give YOU the credit.

That would ruin AdSense program! You canīt receive money for clicking on links! Advertisers would simply remove their ads from the content program.

This is pretty obvious. If publishers are warned not to click on their siteīs adsense links, would Google create a program, in which common users would receive money for clicking on the ads? I donīt believe that will ever happen.

Or the payment could be the use of the browser itself. But ofcourse i hope they dont spoil the browser by advertising in advance. Look where that got them in Gmail. The average user is just too happy to use his old account with more space (as all started giving more space) Business is a Poker game, you never never let the other side know aht hands you hold untill almost the game is up.

Paying the USER to click on the Adsense ads? Worst idea ever.

Now that that's out of the way. I think google's motivation and thinking in all of this might be more global in scope. Think emerging markets (ie China, India etc).

I don't know how much IE dominates the market in these places right now, but as a (comparatively) young market there is a chance for G to come in and solidify their position as the market grows and matures.

Cost is more of an issue over there which is why I think *nix based machines will thrive and google could benefit (via pre-installed gbrowser).

(Or maybe they could just pay the pirates to pre-install g-browser in each MS system ;-)

Just like the toolbar. The browser can

Send feedback to google regarding a user browsing habits.

Allow them to locate new pages to fetch.

Post ads?

...

I think what they do (like toolbar, gmail, now browser) are used to gather internet user surfing statistic for their own advantage.

Maybe. But how many people who did not install the toolbar because of this would then download a Google browser instead?
