Indexed but nowhere to be found

Has anyone ever figured out what did it?

I have a site that used to be ranked #12 for a search phrase the site just naturally optimizes for. Then around February, the site simply was no longer found in the SERPs for that phrase or any other. The PR started at 4 then dropped to 3 then to zero after February and took 4 months to get back to PR3, but the site was always indexed. The site comes up nowhere except for a few exact page title searches. I am in the top 10 for the same phrase at Yahoo (#12 at Ask Jeeves). E-mails to Google say it wasn't being penalized. Sure, I tried a few things, but they weren't out of bounds, maybe at one point "over optimized" but I reverted. Now the code is clean as far as I can tell and there has been no movement in the SERPs. My backlinks count at 28 and include DMOZ. It's driving me crazy. I can't figure it out. I know all the things that can get you in trouble and I never crossed that line. All the other sites I've optimized perform exceptionally well in Google. Has anyone been in my situation and figured out what caused it, and corrected it successfully? Please help!

Thanks
