Hi folks,
I have just had a little idea / brainstorm and need some feedback on whether it will work or not.

There is a certain 'free' shopping cart software (very popular) available for all to use.

What would happen to my PR and backlinks if i was to email owners of stores running the software offering to pay a monthly fee to them to modify the shopping carts footer to say - "sponsored by - mysite.com

Of course, having a link like this would appear on every product page, possibly 100's of pages on there site.

If I had a few trades like this, could this really boost my google page rank?

My opinion is that Google recently started heavily reducing the value of footer or off topic links.
This idea might improve your PR but I dont think it will help you in your position in the SERPS much.
Keep thinking.

you could also run foul with too many links from one site - unnatural linking/associated site

On-Topic Link will get more Pagerank value than Off-Topic Links. I have research this from my own site which has gained the links almost in on-topic link.

If the links are in a database it won't help you anyway because search engines cannot gain access to databases.
