Very good in allintext and allinanchor, not so good in total results

What does it all mean?

I always thought that the "unflagged" searches were where you wanted to place well. But I just got some advice to try allintext and allinanchor searches for some of my keywords. To my surprise, my site was the fifth result. But, for the exact same keywords without those flags, my site isn't even in the top fifty.

This has left me with the obvious question, what does it all mean? It seems like the "flagged" searches must prove that my site is relevant. But if that's the case how is it that completely unrelated sites pop up way above us in the actual SERPS?

And does anyone know what these interesting results should tell me to work on?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this,

Matthew
