Duplicate content filter - Dmoz clones?

How come the duplicate content filter doesnt seem to work for dmoz clones?

I see numerous sites which have very high pr rank due to having 10-20 dmoz clone links.

I would have thought dmoz clones would be the easiest thing to filter out for pr. But then again I guess Google uses a dmoz cloning script.

a - it does work - hundreds of dmoz clones are nuked every month.
b - there is no "filter", just a dupe content penalty. pr just doesn't pass.
c - google uses the raw rdf dump and not 'clone' script.

I only raised the subject because a higher ranking competitor only had backlinks from Dmoz clones. But his site was deleted from dmoz but the clones hadn't updated their index.

There is an ODP category [dmoz.org] which lists sites reported to be using ODP data, whether scraped or RDF-generated.

For a little while now, there have been very many ODP-based pages listed as supplemental results.

I expect this to be the start of a major 'slow death' purge, as some users of affiliate feeds have experienced.

And it doesn't mean those are the only backlinks. Google doesn't show any useful information about backlinks so it is pointless to even mention them.

Dmoz clones (not counting the Google Directory) offer virtually zero pagerank boost. The pagerank from dmoz itself and the google directory dwarf all the clones put together.

Yeah, man. The clones didn't count for anything before and they won't in the future. If they did, the site I maintain would be a PR7 instead of 6, (in three cat's, two of which we asked for, and another that just showed up one day, which adds up to a lot of clones). It's the ODP itself and the G Dir that give the boost. The rest are dross, although they are a big part of the new Google visible backlink scheme.

What does Brett mean when he is saying dmoz clones are nuked? I hope the site is not penalised, but I understand if these links can not pass PR.

I have a themed site and also provide a part of dmoz that is of interest for my visitors. I hope I am not doing anything wrong with that.
