Google seems to be buggy with phrases in the allintitle search:

allintitle:search engine: 2,040,000 results
allintitle:"search engine": 2,050,000 results

There should be more results without using a phrase!

With other keywords you can find results using the allintitle phrase search where the keywords aren't even in the title.

The difference is even bigger now! 2,040,000 v 2,390,000. It is the latter (quotation marks) that is wrong as the second and third results are Google and Yahoo's home pages which don't mention the words search engine in their title. Or maybe this is an interesting tweak by google in their ~ queries whereby google means search engine. I can understand that, but why would Google think Yahoo means a search engine? (I thought it was a portal :))

allintitle:search engine: 2,420,000
allintitle:"search engine": 11,400,000

it's getting funny:
altavista, lycos, search.ch, yahoo, webcrawler, metacrawler, excite and alltheweb

wasn't there another search engine... something starting with goo...? ah yes... place 11! that's why they need more money;)

hey google guy... stop this insanity!

It looks to me as if using a phrase in an allintitle search returns results that don't contain the phrase in the title - seems to just be searching for the phrase and ignoring the allintitle command altogether.

[google.com...]
allintitle:"blue widgets" - 3630

[google.com...]
"blue widgets" - 3630

[google.com...]
258,000

[google.com...]
254,000

with different site top position too.... the all'intitle command works different from normal search results..

Using the phrase is not the issue. I had thought of that, and I went to the advanced search and entered search engine into the exact phrase box and then selected allintitle

The estimate for allintitle:widget is just the same as the estimate for widget.

The difference in numbers is the due to result count twitchiness. The numbers in Google have been pretty vague for as long as I can remember.
