Subdomain www.domain.com/index.* and root domain.com/index.* are two seperate pages as far as google is concerned.
PageRank is calculated on a per page basis - not per domain.
Your domain does not have PageRank, individual pages on your site do.
You can 301 redirect the www to the root, or vice-versa. There are loads of threads about this on here - try a search of WebmasterWorld for examples.
Personally, I'd leave it - it makes it harder for your competition to track your backlinks. Most inexperienced webmasters simply look for backlinks to www.domain.com, without realising that a site may have deeplinks and inbounds to other pages that they are not seeing (and could be targetting themselves).
