Not sure what to tell you. If it's similiar content, then sorry, not much you can do.

Sticky me the URL of the two pages and I'll take a look if you like.

Anyone attempting to sell you on-page optimization for Google should be telling you that this is the 2% of cream on top of the milk. You most probably wanted the other 98%, and on-page optimization is going to get any of that!

Page optimization is useful, but only after you have done all of the other important things.

If all your SEO wants to do is optimize pages or create doorways then you should run, run, run!

If you feel like crying, now would be a good time! Once you have got that out of your system look for the honest guys that get paid based upon results achieved and not on some wing & prayer promise ;)

We all have to live and learn, so take a positive view....you have just learnt not to trust a lot of SEO's :)

Read here and you may be able to give the optimization a go yourself. If not, and you need to hire someone, hire quality. Do some research on the SEO and it's firm (if applicable). As someone above said, anyone offering you on page only for google and telling you it will be effective, run! You need a package for google - good onpage, good design and inbound anchors. With rankings being almost impossible without the third.

Thank you. Yes, I am continuing to read and I am opting to follow the advice of you experts and then give the optimization a try myself, after reading everything thoroughly.

I think SEO's are getting a bad rap here. Everyone is making it seem as though this guy/girl did something dishonest. It's possible, but more times than not it's just a case of lack of knowhow. Also what often happens is people are willing to pay for on page optomization but not the required expense of inbound links or actual traffic. I have had clients that were told explicitly that the site was ready to go and would do well in search engines if there was time spent gathering links, which would also bring traffic. A year later, after making no effort to get links, they wonder why noone visits their site.
Many times there is the mantra of "Build it, and they will come", when it really should be "Promote or die".

Dear Powdork,

Thanks for your note. Well, I have been getting lots of links over the past year , and have done a great job, I think, in that regard.

No, this seo person did help me, but the second page that he optimized, has some of the same content as the first page and I asked him about that and he said oh , don't worry, that is only1/3 of the page, so google won't penalize you. I don't know, first he put the page up without the title tag, google found it, please, it's been a nightmare, now the title tag is there, but I'm still very much upset .

now that page appears on the second page of google, but that is because I've changed some things on the page,

amythepoet,

It sounds like there wasn't really a problem because 1/3 similar content is no big deal. This happens all the time and for legitemate reasons. I would say that some of my sites have 1/3 similar content between pages. Think about the side links and the design these are counted as content too. On pages where there is little content these elements can form a large percentage of the page's overall content.
Sticky me the url's and I can tell for sure but I won't worry about it. There are probably other factors that are coming into play.

"Build it, and they will come", when it really should be "Promote or die".

This is exactly true. Google is all about link reputation at the moment.

I think that the on-page otpimization is more often the client idea than the SEO idea. I often had clients who think that "productA" is our best selling product, so they are not willing to spend money on the "Whole site"........they just wanted me to work on home page and "productA" page because they donot have "Funds" for the whole site SEO. I have never taken such a project but i guess other SEO guys who didnnt wanted to loose these clients succmbed to there demand and try to do best with the selective pages for limited fee. I think the fault comes from both sides.......clients and SEO's. But only SEO is blamed later. I am not judging anyone here.....just piching my two pennies down.
