Picasa - what was google thinking

Google just put on its home page:

"Have a digital camera? Try Google's Picasa software. Free Download."

with a link to:
[picasa.com...]

I thought google was a search engine?

What happens when the brand is so diluted that "google it" it not a synonym for "search it" anymore.

Google does not have any network externalities, and seems like a beast gone wild to me when it tries to build user lock ins.

A concept often thrown around: "Core Competency" might need a relook from google.
