Pop up activated by backbutton

I am thinking of putting a pop up if someone hits the back button on my pages, by using a small javascript code in the head tag.

Any experience of google detecting this and penalising?

Google are not likely to notice this. There has been some speculation about scanning javascript but nothing serious.

Place the code in a separate file and check your logs to see if Googlebot reads it.

Google won't penalize you (yet), but you can expect that your users will.

I won't link to a site that uses tactics like that.
