Duplicate content mystery?

I just noticed a directory on my server named "public_html" that seems to have been created automatically (I certainly didn't create it). I contains duplicates of all the html page that I have posted to the "www" directory. Could the draw the dreaded duplicate site penalty?

Apologies in advance if this question is just too dumb.

My web host does this as well. As far as I can tell (in my case anyway) it's just a symbolic link on the FTP server and doesn't affect the web side of things at all.

They're the same thing and resolve to the same physical directory. No problem.
