wait for Google to notice, or request its removal?

One of our clients has discovered a link to a PDF on their website, which they removed some time ago, in Google. Now they want it removed from Google ASAP, so what's the best approach.
Do they just wait (eventually the 404 message will tell Google to drop it from the index) or should I contact Google directly and ask them to remove it?

I've asked them to remove it. Didn't mention PDFs (only html pages), but we'll see what happens.
